Job 16:20 My friends scorn me; my eye pours out tears to God,
Job 16:21 that he would maintain the right of a mortal with God, as one does for a neighbor.
Job has already asked for this Mediator to plead with God as someone who pleads for a friend. Job asks God to be his friend.
Can we be assured that this approach is what God wants from us? We receive two assurances when we do – First it assures us of who He really is. We are always assured that we will grow when we seek this friendship with Him. When we suffer, we can be comforted with this fact.
The other reason is that God can be fully Himself. God can’t be fully Himself with servants. He can be with friends. He can talk to them differently.
John 15:15 I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father.
Once again, the most remarkable fact about our God – these Mortals maggots and worms He wants to call friends.
