“But If You Are Able…”

Mark 9:17 Someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought you my son; he has a spirit that makes him unable to speak;

Mark 9:18 and whenever it seizes him, it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, but they could not do so.”

Mark 9:22 And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

The disciples could not cast the demon out, but we know that they had the POWER & AUTHORITY to do so.  Jesus gave them both before now.  Why not this time?  The distraught father may be telling us why in what he asks of Jesus –  “But if you can do anything – have compassion…”

Power & authority simply aren’t enough for our God of Love.
